Ancymidol is a tertiary alcohol and a member of pyrimidines that produced by substitution of cyclopropyl, p-methoxyphenyl and pyrimidin-5-yl groups with hydrogens attached to the carbon molecules on methanol. It has a role as a plant growth retardant, and interferes with gibberellin and cellulose biosynthesis. Ancymidol reduces plant growth by inhibiting gibberellin biosynthesis, which results in reduced internode elongation and therefore more compact plants. It is commercially used in production of a wide variety of container-grown bedding and foliage plants, such as poinsettias, Easter lilies, and chrysanthemums.
